Why I'm asking for donations

You might have noticed the “Donate” link that’s been added on the ajaxscaffold website. Although the reason might seem a bit obvious, I’d like to explain why it’s up there.

I was very reluctant to put up the virtual tip jar. I felt that thrill I get from people’s positive feedback was reward enough, a sentiment that I think most other OSS contributors can relate to and part of why it’s such a growing movement.

Unfortunately there is this cold hard reality I’m facing called “the bills”.

Five months ago I may not have been intellectually fulfilled in my cushy IT job but I was making more money than a 24 year old needs. Now that I’ve left that security to pursue “the dream” with Kiko and my own assorted projects, the scales have tipped the other direction (It didn’t help how naive I was about the scourge that is self employment tax).

The reception to Ajax Scaffold project far exceeded my expectations and helped drive me to put more time and effort into it than I ever planned. All this work has been to the detriment of other projects which actually have some possibility of a positive cash flow. Thus the circle is complete and the obvious answer exposed. Regardless of income, I will continue to work on Ajax Scaffold and respond to any inquiries/comments/suggestions that come my way.

Any and all donations of kind words, constructive criticisms, code submission, bugs and even yes those of the monetary sort are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks.

Rule #1 when you are self employed – NEVER apologise for saying what you think you are worth.

We are pitching a project right now which will use your AjaxScaffold templates – purely because they will save me a stack of time and make the end results look damn good.

When we get the job and get paid by our client, I will definitely be sending a donation your way!

Hey Richard, I’ve been a fan of the Ajax Scaffold for a while now, and this latest version is excellent. I’m using it for a project where I’m not currently getting paid, but I still dropped a couple of bucks into the tip jar.. and if/when I do get paid for this project, I’ll be sure to send a bit more your way too. You’re doing some excellent work, saved me a buttload of time and effort, and you deserve to be recompensed. Keep codin’!

Hi Rich, I think accepting donations is a great idea. I’m currently using AjaxScaffold for a big fat government contract website, I will be sure to donate a nice chunk in the pot (as soon as they pay me!) since you’ve definitely saved me a hell of a lot of time.

Thanks
