Brighthouse ported to WordPress

Posted by Richard White Sat, 29 Jul 2006 19:07:50 GMT

Thanks go to Max Limpag for porting Brighthouse over to WordPress. Now if there was just a conversion tool for posts and comments I’d port this blog over to WordPress, Typo sucks.

The port to Wordpress is great and strange at the same time. I just emailed Richard about porting Brighthouse to Wordpress today. Before he responded and told me about Max’s release I actually started the port. Oh well, I didn’t make it that far anyway. Thanks a bunch! (both of you)

Richard: I don’t know of a conversion tool, but if you could make the switch you would love Wordpress.

Why does Typo suck? Having never used it (I used MT and Wordpress and then just turned off the blog) I would think it would be pretty nice since it is a Rails app. What is wrong with Typo?

  3. Greg said about 2 hours later:

“Sucks” is a pretty strong word. Have you tried 4.0 yet? How about backing up the word “sucks” with some examples of why it “sucks” or better yet, get involved and help make it better.

  4. Richard White said 1 day later:

@Greg: It is a strong word, but being passive and saying that it’s ‘less than good’ is a waste of my time. You are correct on all counts though.

    1) I’m on an old version (2.6.0) so I’ll amend what I said to ‘Typo 2.6.0 sucks’.

    2) I wasn’t really expecting anyone to care or call me on it, nor was I going spend the time ranting about Typo. Anyways, my response are: the UI for creating entries is terrible (I tried using the API to create them via a seperate tool but no luck), no pingbacks, setting up the sidebars is flaky, and it leaks memory.

    3) I could do that, or I could just switch to wordpress, both are free. Plus I don’t have the time for another project, if I this blog wouldn’t still be running Typo :)

At the end of the day I’ll probably just migrate to 4.0 anyways (someday) so you can just ignore my whining.

@Matt: By strange you mean the timing was strange or the ported version is (I haven’t looked at the code)

  6. Matt (Mithrill) said 1 day later:

I mean the timing is strange (sorry for not clarifying). As far as I can tell the code is fine, but I haven’t performed a detailed analysis.

  7. Garth Oatley said 5 days later:

Sucks is a strong word indeed but I agree with you to some extent. I was using earlier versions of typo and it leaked memory making it difficult to keep running on shared hosts. I’m currently running 3.9.3 and it’s solid. I tried upgrading to 4.0 but didn’t get on with it. Give typo another chance!

  8. FriedGeek said 5 days later:

I would have to agree with Richard on Typo. Being a long time WP user I still check out other platforms now and then and the last time I checked out Typo I found it lacking when stood up next to my WP install. But if Typo ever beats out WP in my highly scientific testing ( Known in the industry as SharpSTICK 3.1 with the PokePoke plugin ) then I’ll switch.

WTF? Just because it is built with Ruby on Rails does not make it a great web app. You can make crap with any platform.

  10. Richard White said 28 days later:

Alright, I’m running 4.0 now so we’ll see how she handles in the corners.
